The Centre for Marine Simulation (CMS) possesses extensive capabilities to develop and deliver specialized marine simulation services. The CSM is unique in that it operates a wide variety of simulators, some of which are mounted on motion bases.

Ballast Control and Cargo Handling Simulator
The ballast control simulator was commissioned in 1994. This simulator is used to replicate operations conducted in the ballast control room of an oil rig. The simulator is mounted on a two degree of freedom motion base and is supplemented by desktop trainers. Float-on/float-off vessels can also be simulated. Learn More.

Dynamic Positioning Simulator
The Centre for Marine Simulation (CMS) houses three different dynamic positioning simulators with custom built visualization systems designed by CMS. Kongsberg’s SDP system was commissioned in 1997, expanded in 1998, and upgraded in 2009, while its KPOS system was installed and commissioned in 2010. These simulators are used to replicate precision manoeuvring systems that are found on vessels operating in the offshore, scientific, cable-laying and cruise industries. Learn More.

Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS) Simulator
Commissioned in 2011, this navigation information system can be used as an alternative to paper charts. An electronic chart display and information system (ECDIS) displays the information from system electronic navigational charts (SENC) with positional information from navigation sensors to assist the mariner in route planning and route monitoring. Fast Time Maneuvering Simulator
Commissioned in 2008, the Fast Time Maneuvering Simulator is used to predict the path of a ship through a waterway and can accelerate maneuvers by 1000 times normal speed or faster. Learn More.

Full Mission Ship’s Bridge Simulator
Originally commissioned in 1994 and upgraded in 2020, this simulator is used to replicate operations conducted on a ship’s navigation bridge in any sea state and conditions. Learn More.

Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) Simulator
Commissioned in 1994 and upgraded in 2012, the global maritime distress and safety system simulator is used to replicate emergency radio operations conducted on the bridge of a ship. The simulator is desktop based and is supplemented by a live instruments lab. Learn More.

Heritage Bridge Simulator
Commissioned in 2019, the Heritage Class Ship’s Bridge simulator is used to replicate operations of an offshore shuttle tanker. Learn More.

Lifeboat Launch Simulator
The lifeboat launch simulator is used to replicate the launching of lifeboats into high seas and with a variety of fault conditions. Learn More.

NetSim
NetSim is a DNV certified Class S electronic navigation simulator developed by Virtual Marine Technology to provide trainees with practical experience using radar, global positioning systems and ECS systems to complete blind pilotage navigation exercises. Learn More.

Process Control Simulator
Commissioned in 2004, the process control simulator is used to replicate the operations of a control room on board a floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel. Learn More.

Propulsion Plant Simulator
Commissioned in 1994 and upgraded in 2010, the propulsion plant simulator is used to replicate the operations in the control room of a ship’s engine-room. The simulator has a surround sound system and is supplemented by desktop trainers. Learn More.

Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) Simulator
Commissioned in 2006, the remotely operated vehicle simulator is used to replicate the operations of offshore and military workclass vehicles. The control consoles are mounted in cubicles which approximate conditions on board the vessel. Learn More.

Simulated Electronic Navigation (SEN) Live Equipment Laboratory
Commissioned in 1994 and upgraded in 2010, the navigation instruments laboratory has been designed for a maximum of eight students and enables them to become familiar with the set up and operation of the various bridge gear as required by Transport Canada Simulated Electronic Navigation (SEN) 1A.
